Film Review : January

A few films I have seen recently...............

1. Dorian Gray (2009)
Imdb rating 6.3
An average film with a great performance from Colin Firth.
It has further persuaded me to read the book.

2. The Grinch (2000)
Imdb rating 5.7
One of the best Christmas films. Jim Carey is genius as The Grinch.
I took more from it at the age of twenty than I did when I first saw it at nine years old.
I was really surprised to see that Imdb had given it such a low rating.

3. Un Prophete (2009)
Imdb rating 8.0
I adore French films and 'A Prophet' did not disappoint.
Despite being set in a male prison it is extremely relatable and questions how far you are willing to step over your own moral line.

4. Twenty Four Seven (1997)
Imdb rating 6.9
The first of Shane Meadows films, it is considered by some as his least successful. However, I found it entertaining and moving. The gritty style, synonymous with Meadows results in a story that is believable if not a little far fetched. Well worth a watch.

5. Made in Dagenham (2010)
Imdb rating 7.1
A fantastic feel good film with some great 60's outfit inspiration.
Sally Hawkins is brilliant as Rita O'Grady.

Best Blogger: December

Elena of her self-named personal style blog Vasilieva is a recent find. She has great style, and incorporates some beautiful photography on her blog.

What makes her a Best Blogger:

  • She is a designer, and showcases her pieces regularly.
  • She can style fantastic looks for a cold climate. This is extremely relevant to me as I live in England!
  • She can re-wear pieces several times and still make them appear fresh.

Film Review : December

A few films I've seen recently.....

1. A Streetcar Named Desire
1951
Based on the play by Tennessee Thomas.
Starring Marlon Brando and Vivian Leigh.
Imdb rating 8.1
I was a little distracted when I saw this, so I should probably see it again to give it a fair rating.
The characters were portrayed brilliantly, and it challenges issues like rape and domestic abuse.

2. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
1975
Based on the novel by Ken Kesey
Starring Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito
Imdb rating 8.8
This was a brilliant film, and I would definitely recommend it.
The characters are really intriguing, and it has a surprise ending!

3. Winter's bone
2010
Based on the novel by Daniel Woodrell
Starring Jennifer Lawrence
Imdb rating 7.3
Quite a slow film, although really interesting story line.
You can really sympathise with Ree, the main character, she plays the part brilliantly.

4. Enid
2009
Directed by James Hawes
Starring Helena Bonham Carter and a few other familar faces
Imdb rating 6.7
Based on Enid Blyton's life, it tells the story of her career and her family life.
I really enjoyed this made for tv film as I love Helena Bonham Carter!
